Child, look where you’re going or else you will fall
Sage advice from parents we each can recall,
But with it, the feel of strong hands on our arms
They were our support, no cause for alarm.
We were loved and cared for ‘til adulthood was gifted
A mystery all tangled in strings, sometimes thrifted
Infinite possibilities — the world was our oyster,
And excitedly we set forth, to slay and to conquer.
So much freedom, we got to choose whatever we fancied
So free that we were even able to choose bondage.
Unhappiness became the main course — warm and moist,
With a side dish of despair, making it our first choice.
As time went its way, so much smarter we grew,
The realization was birthed that growth made us new.
And that any real change only came from within
And looking without was the eighth deadly sin.
We were asked to adjust mentally with — out surgery,
And decide on our path with some level of urgency
Choices were ours to make, and every choice asked another
In this strange new place, there was no calling our mother.
We decide if to pause and choose backward glances
And possibly missing life’s happy circumstances,
Can be painful that move, missing the beauty that’s here,
While at the same time we march toward a future so clear.
I won’t offer platitudes that it’s gonna be okay
I’m your friend after all, I must watch what I say
and if you cannot decide right now, go take a nap,
the energy will change and you’ll get a next crack.
